The key to an effective adult acne treatment is preventing the blemishes from starting in the first place. Did you know it takes a full one to two weeks for a blemish to surface. That bump you see staring you in the face is actually the final step in the process.
Your skin needs targeted medicines that can penetrate to where the problem originates, by stopping the acne before you can see it on the skin's surface.
So here's my list of the "Top 3" acne fighting ingredients that you need for an effective adult acne treatment plan.
1. Sulfur. This amazing ingredient has been around for thousands of years. It will go to work on your skin by helping to clear the pores by shedding dead skin cells. It also provides an immediate benefit by reducing that dreaded redness and swelling that we get so often with our adult acne. Many people turn up their nose when they hear the word sulfur because they assume it stinks. Well, not to worry. With advanced purification processes the sulfur that goes in skin care products is much more pleasant to the nose. Well worth it to have this gem handy.
2. Benzoyl Peroxide. So this is a must-have ingredient that will go to war for your skin. By that I mean it's main function is to kill the P. acne bacteria, the bacteria that causes acne. It also helps to remove the dead skin cells that clog pores. This stuff is so good that studies have shown that benzoyl peroxide is more effective than oral antibiotics in treating acne without the risk of bacterial resistance.
The one negative I need to mention is that it can discolor clothing and towels. Other than that it is definitely one to add to your beauty arsenal if you haven't already.
3. Hydroxy acids. Have you heard of these? Not only are they effective for acne but they also are found in many anti-aging products as well because they act as a chemical exfoliator. There are 3 classes of hydroxy acids: alpha hydroxy acids(AHA's), beta hydroxy acids(BHA's), and poly hydroxy acids(PHA's). With AHA's and BHA's being the most popular.
AHA's include glycolic acid(derived from sugar cane), and lactic acid(derived from milk). These exfoliators work on the top layer of the skin by speeding up skin cell turn over. Getting rid of the dead skin cells allows treatment products like benzoyl peroxide to better penetrate and get down deep in the pores to do its job.
As far as BHA's salicylic acid is the only one in this class. I personally have had great results with this ingredient in a toner. It helps clear the blemishes and reduce oiliness.
So there you have it. These are your 'go to's" for an effective treatment of adult acne. Since acne starts deep down below the surface, I'd recommend you use products with these ingredients to get your skin in tip top shape.
