Many people crawl out of bed and can’t even fathom the idea of eating anything first thing in the morning. A quick cup of coffee has become the standard adult breakfast. However, a good breakfast can help adults and children be more energetic and less irritable. Studies have also linked a healthy breakfast with fewer diseases and overall better health.
So here are the most common excuses for skipping breakfast:
1. I don’t have time I’ll just grab a doughnut. This may sound really good and convenient but these sugared foods pass through the bloodstream very quickly and cause blood sugar levels to rise and fall pretty fast. This can cause energy levels to drop off later in the morning leaving you feeling tired. On the other hand when you eat something that contains more fiber like fresh fruit or whole-grain cereal you’ll find that your energy levels stay high throughout the morning. This is because fiber absorbs water as it moves through the stomach and intestines. The spongy mass acts a barrier to the food particles suspended in it so that they are not absorbed too quickly. Pretty interesting, huh?
2. I’m just not hungry in the morning. People who eat a big dinner often say they are not hungry when they wake up in the morning. When they go to bed their stomachs are still busy digesting all of that food. The digestion process actually slows down during sleep hours so oftentimes by morning food is still in the belly from the night before. This will leave you feeling full and not in the mood for breakfast. The solution is to eat a light dinner at least 4 hours before bedtime and eat or drink nothing but water or fruit between dinner time and bedtime.
3. I’m trying to lose weight. This is a common misconception. Many people who are trying to lose weight think skipping meals and not eating will help them shed some pounds. In actuality, the body will hold onto fat thinking it is starving. A daily healthy breakfast along with exercise will help kick start the metabolism into fat-burning mode.
