I thought I was doing a pretty good job of taking care of myself until one of my friends called me out. A good friend will tell you the truth not what they think you want to hear. I am a firm believer in taking care of yourself. For many people the thought of putting themselves first seems selfish. But it's not. If you've been on a plane and listened to the safety presentation, what do they tell you if you're traveling with a small child? Yep, they say put your own oxygen mask on first then assist your child. You are no good to others if you don't take care of yourself first.
Don't Neglect Your Health
So back to my friend. Lately I have been really concentrating on taking care of mine and my family's health. I've been exercising more and trying to cook more balanced and nutritious meals, you know the whole nine yards. I have been feeling better. I noticed I have more energy and I am starting to see those stubborn pounds drop off.
After months of putting it off I finally made an appointment to get my hair professionally styled. For the past two years I had been doing it myself. When I walked in the salon door, my friend(who is also my hair stylist) gave me a hug and asked what kind of purse I was carrying. I shrugged it off and said, "oh this old thing, I've had it for years." I sat down and waited for her to finish up the client she was working on. I put my purse in my lap and actually looked at it. "OMG!", I thought. I hadn't taken a good hard look at this purse in over a year and it looked like it had been run over by a truck. No wonder she asked about my purse.
Keep Your Appearance Up
As my friend was doing my hair we got into a deep conversation about the importance of taking care of yourself. She is about 10 or 12 years older than me so I look at her like a big sister. She said, "Tasha it is so important to keep yourself up. Take the time each day to put on your make-up, put on a nice outfit, and for goodness sakes invest in a good quality purse." I had to admit I had fallen victim of pony tails, sweats, and no make-up on most days. It dawned on me. I was taking care of my inside but neglecting my outside.
It was definitely time for a change. I'll tell you what. Once I made a conscious effort to "put my best face forward" and really think about how I was presenting myself to the world everyday, things started to change. My kids started telling me I looked younger and I even caught my husband staring a few times;)
When you begin to put your self first, taking care of yourself on the inside and outside you can't help but feel good about yourself. And when you feel good about yourself other people want to be around you and want to know what you are doing differently. Feeling good is infectious, everyone wants a piece of it!
