If you have goals you’ve been struggling to achieve perhaps your mindset needs a tune-up. Whether you are wanting to start a new career, go back to school, start a business. I’d like to outline some positive thinking techniques that can be used to propel you forward to reaching your goals.
Make yourself think positively about your goal for at least 15-20 minutes twice a day
When I was at my engineering job I would imagine what it would be like once I was nurse. I would be able to volunteer at my kid’s school more and go on field trips because my schedule would be more flexible. I would not have to worry about getting a project completed on time or having weekly meetings with my boss about the progress. No more having to give a monthly presentation to the plant manager, which I hated. I would think about all of these things throughout the day to keep me motivated to get through nursing school.
During this 15-20 minute time period you will use positive thinking techniques to think about how fulfilled your life will be once you achieve your goal. Don’t worry about the new skills you may need to acquire and how you will do that… just focus on the good.
But here is the key. You have to imagine it as if it has already happened. I would say to myself, “I am so grateful I am a happy and fulfilled nurse who enjoys her work.” Instead of “Someday I’ll be a nurse.” Big difference, huh?
Get in the habit of reading success stories of people who have been where you are now
This is huge! Whenever you are down and feeling like you will never achieve your goal that’s when you need to read success stories of people who have been where you are and have overcame odds to become successful.
For instance, I would often search for second career nurse success stories to keep me motivated. You can find a ton of stuff just by searching Google. Forums and discussion boards are a great way to meet others with similar interests and goals. Here’s a great way to quickly find forums for your specific topic. Go into Google and type in your topic; add a colon and the words “forum”. For example if I am searching for forums for a second career nurse I would type this in: second career nurse: forums. Google will give me a whole list of forums about second career nurses. You can do the same thing for blogs or discussion boards.
It’s also a good idea to read biographies of people you admire. You want to fill your head with thoughts that you can do anything you put your mind to.
Another good technique to reinforce positive thinking is to post positive messages in areas where you will see them often. I put messages on my computer and on my refrigerator. When I was at my engineering job I had them posted all over my cubicle. Make them your wallpaper on your computer. You get the idea.
Limit the time you spend with people who bring you down
There were many people who were not supportive of me changing careers especially after 12 years of being at the same job. Many thought I was nuts. Some would say” why bother it’s just a job”. “You don’t have to like what you are doing as long as it pays the bills”. Needless to say, I had to walk away from those people otherwise I would have absorbed what they were saying.
Some people in your life may mean well but you may have to love them from a distance if you get my drift.
As Will Smith says in the movie The Pursuit of Happyness, “You gotta dream, you gotta protect it. If people can’t do something themselves they want to tell you that you can’t do it. If you want something, go get it. Period.” Whoo…I love that! If you haven’t seen this movie I highly recommend you watch it and then watch it again. You will definitely be inspired to pursue your dreams.
Have an attitude of gratitude
Take time to reflect on things you are grateful for. Maybe it’s your family, your home, your special talent. Also, recognize your success and how far you have come. Whether it is starting the research on your new career or enrolling in a class. Pat yourself on the back. Keep a record of your successes by keeping a journal. It will keep you motivated by being able to reflect on your accomplishments.
Lastly, examine your goals. Imagine what you want and then break those dreams into yearly, monthly, weekly, and daily goals that you can be working on.
As you learn to replace negative thoughts with positive ones you will start believing in your ability to accomplish your goals.
Whatever your dreams and goals are…Pursue them! Put everything you have in them and never give up.
Realize that setbacks may happen but don’t let them stop you.
The last and most important principle is to believe that God gave you everything you need to achieve your goals. You already have it all in you! Take time each day to pray and ask God to give you laser focus so you don’t stray from the path of your goal.
You can do this…I believe in you!!
