So, you are overjoyed about the arrival of your bundle of joy. But frustrated with the changes your skin may be going through, especially acne while you’re pregnant. During this time acne can be unpredictable. It can clear, improve, or worsen.
The main culprit during pregnancy is hormones as you may have guessed. They cause the body to overproduce oil which in turn can lead to acne.
K.I.S.S. or “keep it simple sweetie” is what you should be going for if you’re pregnant.
Cleanse your skin twice daily with a mild cleanser
Use a gentle exfoliator 2 or 3 times a week in place of your cleanser to remove dead skin cells and improve your skin tone and texture
Try to keep your hair out of your face
Refrain from picking or squeezing which can lead to infection and/or scarring. If you just can’t help yourself make sure to read my complimentary report about how to properly get the gunk out of your pores;)
Stick to water-based, non-comedogenic cosmetics.
Read the ingredients on your Pre-Natal vitamins. If they contain high levels of iodide this could be causing acne flare-ups. Iodide can irritate the skin and cause acne breakouts. Talk with your doctor about other vitamin brands that have less or no iodide.
Consult a dermatologist or your OBGYN before using over the counter products that contain benzoyl peroxide and salicylic acid. This has ingredients chemically similar to aspirin. Also, topical medications that contain retinoids like Retin-A should be avoided during pregnancy. These have been known to cause birth defects.
