Finally Set Free
For those of us in the United States, today is the day we celebrate Independence Day. The words freedom and liberty resonate. It reminds me of when I felt stuck in my career 8 years ago and was finally set free. In my mind I did what I was “supposed” to do. I graduated from college, got a job, started working. But I was miserable. I was doing something I dreaded and that I knew in my heart was not really “me”. I felt out of my element, like a square peg in a round hole.
People are often surprised when I tell them that I was an engineer before I became a nurse. The response is usually, “oh, you must have taken the buyout when the industry started to tank, huh?” I just smile and say, “no, I left on my own because I was ready for a change. I love the puzzled look on their face when they say, “is that right?”
When I went into nursing I told myself I would never put myself in a position where I felt stuck in my career again. If I got tired of working in an area I would just try something else. And that’s exactly what I’ve done for the past 6 years since I became a nurse. I’ve done hospital nursing, private duty, home care visits, and long term care. I currently work in the float pool for a large hospital system. I am able to create my own schedule leaving weekends and holidays optional. It’s wonderful. I have the flexibility to work around my kid’s schedules and still earn a paycheck.
While I truly love being a nurse and caring for others, it still means I have to trade time for dollars. My float pool job has its perks but it does not allow for complete independence and freedom. For this reason I made the decision to start a home-based online business in the health and wellness arena. It allows me to continue to help others while earning a residual income.
