Let’s face it…no pun intended lol… Adult Acne SUCKS! Sorry there’s just no other way to put it.
If you’re like me you’re frustrated about having to wake up every morning and look in the mirror to see pimples taking over your face…how can this be? Acne is supposed to be a teenager thing right? Wrong!
Let’s break this acne thing down…
Once that pore is closed over the debris cannot escape and will continue to build up. This leads to a collection of bacteria, redness, inflammation, and possibly acne cysts if left untreated.
If we are adults why on earth are we still getting acne?
Well, if you were one of the unlucky ones to get acne as a teenager then you are more than likely to see it surface again in your adult years…you can thank your family tree for that… in other words its in your genes!
According to recent statistics adult acne affects 25% of men and 50% of women at some point in their adult life. But wait it gets better…one-third of adult acne sufferers also struggle with body acne. (That would be me)
When you were a teenager you might have experienced more oily skin and more blackheads and whiteheads. As adults we tend to see our acne along the jaw line and neck but its usually accompanied by dryer and/or combination skin.
With adult acne you may see red bumps or even cysts and the inflammation, tenderness and redness tends to last longer because our adult skin is more slow to heal.
Hormones, Stress, Products…Oh my!!
All these factors can play a role in adult acne. Stress can cause your oil glands also known as ‘sebaceous glands’ to produce more oil which can lead to more clogged pores and result in pimples.(It’s just one nasty cycle)
If your hormones fluctuate especially during menstruation your oil glands can become overly sensitive and produce too much oil. This high sensitivity is usually seen in your 20’s and 30’s.
Check out what you are putting on your hair. If you are using things like gels, pomade, conditioners you could be clogging your pores because a lot of these products have oil in Ok, how about your face…. What type of sunscreen, shaving products or moisturizer are you using on your skin? If they have a ton of oil in them they could be clogging your pores as well.
Switching to products that don’t clog your pores also called ‘noncomedogenic’ can make a huge difference in the appearance of your skin.
Our adult acne may not be curable but it most definitely is treatable but you need to educate yourself on your skin. It may be trial and error but take time to learn what works and doesn’t work for your skin.
The skin is the largest organ of the body and it is unique to each person. So, what may work for one person may not work for you and vice versa. There is no one perfect product that is going to work for every adult acne sufferer.
